The “Restaurant des Herzens” in Erfurt served the last dishes for the 2021/2022 season on Friday.

From December to the end of January, the facility, which is run by the Protestant welfare association Diakonie, gives out food to people who cannot cook themselves or who are short on money for a small fee.

Patron and Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) was on Friday himself at the red cabbage issue.

Erfurt – This season, the restaurant served around 150 hot meals including drinks, dessert and treats to around 90 guests per day;

around 6000 dishes in the eight weeks of operation.

Due to Corona, however, the food was only available to take away over the counter.

“Many then freeze something for later days or take it with their neighbors,” said a spokeswoman.

The guests, who said they came to the restaurant not only for the meal but also for chatting, had to be content with small conversations in the queue in front of the door.

From Monday, the “Café des Herzens” will start operating again with its breakfast menu.

Both projects are largely funded by donations.

According to Diakonie information, the costs for the restaurant this season were around 85,000 euros.

“Numerous companies, sports clubs, students and private individuals have contributed to the success of the restaurant season with their donations in kind and money.

We would like to say a big thank you on behalf of all our guests.”
