Banner Alzheimer’s Institute to Host 19th Annual Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia in Native American Communities

The Banner Alzheimer’s Institute’s Native American Outreach Program is set to conduct its 19th annual “Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia in Native Americans” on October 30, 2023. Scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the event will take place at the Grand Ballrooms of the Little America Hotel in Flagstaff, Arizona.

This conference serves as a vital platform for disseminating information pertinent to families, professional caregivers, health and human service providers, educators, and tribal leaders regarding the impacts of Alzheimer’s and dementia on Native American communities. Critical topics will be addressed during the event, including the caregiver experience, self-care strategies for managing stress, effective communication, and the latest research updates on Alzheimer’s disease.

Research indicates that Native Americans face a disproportionately high risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease compared to white populations. According to statistics from the Alzheimer’s Association, one in five Native Americans aged 45 and older reports experiencing issues related to memory or cognitive function. These findings underscore the necessity of targeted educational initiatives within tribal communities.

Lori Nisson, the Family and Community Services Director at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, emphasized the importance of the conference, stating, “This gathering is an opportunity to share knowledge, resources, and hope with those who are walking the dementia journey in Native communities. By working together, we can honor traditions, strengthen caregiving, and ensure that families have the culturally meaningful support they need.”

In addition to the main conference, there will be a pre-conference intensive workshop tailored for professionals serving tribal communities, occurring on October 29, 2023, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the same venue. This pre-conference event is designed to equip attendees with specialized skills pertinent to supporting Native American families and individuals affected by dementia and related disorders.
