2024 Toyota Land Cruiser: Evaluating Efficiency as an SUV

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser has undergone a significant transformation compared to its predecessor. While maintaining its purpose as an SUV, this new model is not as large as the previous version. The older Land Cruiser was known for its luxurious features, but the 2024 Toyota SUV offers a high-quality cabin with several changes from one generation to the next.

One of the key differences between the two Land Cruiser generations is the size and seating capacity. The 2022 version was a three-row, full-size SUV with a V8 engine, while the 2024 model features two rows of seats, falls into the midsize SUV category, and is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain.

With such differences, questions arise about the power and efficiency of this new Toyota SUV. In terms of power, the previous generation utilized a 5.7-liter V8 engine producing 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the 2024 Land Cruiser employs a hybrid powertrain that delivers 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. While the new model may have lower horsepower, the size difference compensates for it, potentially resulting in better overall performance figures.

When it comes to efficiency, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser outperforms its predecessor in terms of fuel economy. The old V8 powertrain achieved 13 city / 17 hwy / 23 combined mpg, while the 2024 model reaches 22 city / 25 hwy mpg, making it more efficient. However, compared to other hybrid SUVs in the market, these figures may not be considered groundbreaking.

While there are many hybrid SUVs that offer better fuel economy, most of them require compromises that the new Land Cruiser does not. Despite not having the highest fuel economy figures, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser stands out for its off-road capabilities and upscale interior features that make it a well-rounded SUV.
