Expansion of Childcare Options in Jefferson County: 80 New Slots for Families

Lakewood, Colorado — In a significant move to enhance early childhood education accessibility, Jefferson County Head Start has been awarded a grant that will create 80 new childcare slots starting October 1. This expansion will provide 64 additional preschool openings and 16 toddler slots across four newly designated locations in Lakewood and Golden.

Rachel Meixner, the Director of Jefferson County Head Start, noted the recent transition of grant responsibilities from the city of Lakewood to the Jefferson County program. “The city of Lakewood was the previous grant recipient for Head Start services, but after the City Council’s vote to rescind it, we seized the opportunity to apply. With the support of the Board of County Commissioners, we secured the necessary funds to continue these vital services,” Meixner explained.

The four new locations offering these services include:
– 11th Ave. Head Start
– Patterson Early Head Start and Pre-K
– Patterson Pre-K
– Daniels Head Start

Classes will operate on a four-day school week, with students attending from Tuesday through Friday for 7.5 hours each day. The program is designed to cater to low-income families, making it especially impactful in addressing the childcare affordability crisis many families face. “Head Start is a cost-free program for eligible families, which is crucial for those who otherwise might struggle to afford center-based care. This addition makes childcare more accessible for families in need,” added Meixner.

As the Head Start program welcomes this new batch of slots, it does so amid uncertainties concerning federal funding, particularly with discussions surrounding potential budget cuts in the upcoming fiscal year. “Currently, we are awaiting the fiscal year 2026 appropriations, which will determine our funding levels for Head Start. Continuing to operate without increases to the federal appropriations, especially given inflationary pressures, poses significant challenges,” stated Meixner.

Eligibility for the Head Start program extends to families with incomes at or below 100% of the federal poverty level, and in some cases, up to 130%. Families receiving benefits such as SNAP, TANF, or SSI are automatically qualified, as are children in foster care and families experiencing homelessness.

For families interested in applying for one of the new childcare slots, application details can be found on the Jefferson County website. This expansion not only offers immediate childcare solutions but also reflects broader trends in early childhood education policy aimed at supporting the most vulnerable populations. As funding and resources continue to evolve, community-based initiatives like this play a crucial role in ensuring equitable access to education for all families.
