Digitization Initiative Aims to Preserve HBCU Heritage through Historic Records
In a significant effort to preserve and protect the historical records of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Getty Images has unveiled a partnership with genealogical platform Ancestry. This initiative, announced in a press release earlier this week, is part of Getty Images’ ongoing HBCU Grants Program, which seeks to enhance the visibility and accessibility of important cultural archives that are integral to understanding African American history and heritage.
The partnership will focus on digitizing various school records and documents, ensuring they are not only preserved but also made accessible to a wider audience through online platforms. Prior to this initiative, the HBCU Grants Program had primarily concentrated on the digitization of photographs, resulting in the creation of the HBCU Collection, which currently boasts over 10,000 photos available for public viewing on Getty Images’ website.
Cassandra Illidge, Executive Director of the HBCU Grants Program, highlighted the necessity of broadening the scope of their efforts during recent visits to partner institutions. “While we have made significant strides with photographic archives, we recognized that vital records and historical documents also require our attention,” Illidge stated. “These documents play a crucial role in narrating the legacy of HBCUs and must be preserved for future generations.”
HBCUs are not merely educational institutions; they are vital repositories of African American history and culture.
