Henrico County Social Services Division Seeks Prospective Foster Parents with Upcoming Orientation Meetings
The Henrico County Social Services Division is set to host two informative orientation meetings aimed at potential foster parents. These sessions are designed as an essential first step for adults interested in fostering children, touching on the need for families willing to open their homes to some of the county’s most vulnerable youth.
The upcoming meetings are scheduled as follows:
– January 21, 2024: Online from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Interested participants can register here.
– February 3, 2024: In-person at the Twin Hickory Library from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
The need for foster families in Henrico County is particularly pressing for children aged 12 and older, large sibling groups consisting of two or more children, and young children aged birth to four who might not be able to attend daycare. The county seeks committed resource parents ready to support family reunification efforts and, if necessary, adopt children whose families cannot be reunited. Additionally, respite parents, who offer temporary care to children in emergencies or on a planned basis, are also needed.
The dual-certification model implemented by the state of Virginia allows families to be recognized as both foster and adoptive parents. This flexibility is crucial, as many children may not be able to return to their biological families, making it imperative for foster families to be prepared for adoption if the need arises. During the home study process, prospective foster parents can express their preferences regarding fostering, adoption, or both.
In addition to addressing immediate foster care needs, respite providers play a vital role in safeguarding at-risk children by providing support to biological parents, potentially preventing the necessity for foster care placements altogether.
For those interested in learning more about becoming a foster parent or to clarify any queries, the Henrico County Social Services Division encourages direct communication with their staff. Interested parties can reach out to Morgan Wood at (804) 501-7496 or via email at woo139@henrico.gov, or contact Emily Fisher at (804) 652-3317 or fis106@henrico.gov.
These orientation meetings are a timely opportunity for community members to contribute to the welfare of children in their area, demonstrating the collective responsibility to support the next generation.
