A Festival of Korean Dance Returns to The Place, London for a seventh year!
The upcoming A Festival of Korean Dance is set to captivate audiences for its seventh year, with a diverse range of shows that explore various themes. From the joys of soaring to the impact of social media and the presentation of traditional Asian values in contemporary ways, this festival promises to be an unforgettable experience.
This year, the festival will also be making its way to Scotland, with performances at Tramway in Glasgow on 16 May. The Korean Cultural Centre UK, in collaboration with The Lowry, Pavilion Dance South East, and Dance City Newcastle, will bring the festival to a wider audience with the support of the Korea Arts Management Service.
Audience favorite Sung Im Her will showcase new work, while Ae-Soon Ahn, former Artistic Director of Korea National Contemporary Dance Company, will make her UK debut.
One of the highlights of the festival is the double bill performance of “Kontemporary Korea” on 22 May, featuring “Flight” by Melancholy Dance Company and “Tomorrowisnowtodayisyesterday” by Sung Im Her. Flight explores the human desire to achieve goals through leaps and falls, while Tomorrowisnowtodayisyesterday delves into the impact of social media on society.
Another must-see performance is “Burnt Offering” on 25 May by 99Artcompany, which invites audiences to reflect on new rituals, prayers, and drawing from past traditions. The dancers in Burnt Offering are immersed in daily routines until they are awakened to a dance filled with noble spirit.
Closing the festival on 31 May is “Cheok” by Ae-Soon Ahn, which explores personal measurement through the traditional Asian concept of “span of the hand.” The performance combines dance with light, video, sound, and movement to rediscover traditional Asian values.
