High school students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Whittell are showcasing their artwork at the “Spring Forward 2024” art exhibition at the Brick. The exhibition features imaginative projects that demonstrate the students’ years of classroom study and impressive craftsmanship.
Organized by the Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI), the student show is being held at the Community Development Building (the Brick) on 108 E Proctor Street in Carson City. The exhibition will run until May 23, 2024, with a reception for the students scheduled for April 10 from 5-6:30pm. The Brick is open to the public Monday to Friday from 8am – noon, 1-4pm. An online exhibition video tour featuring interviews with the artists will be available soon.
The “Spring Forward 2024” exhibition includes a diverse range of art media such as ceramics, drawing, painting, and mixed media pieces.
Notable participating students include Whittell High School’s Faith Goldstein, Mara Greene, Ella Martin, and Ayla Rodrigues under the guidance of teacher Paul Lorion. Dayton High School students Haley Drews, Yarah Funes-Cruz, Leanna Grahmann, Sidney Malone, and others, who studied with teacher Malaynia Wick, are also contributing to the exhibition. Additionally, Douglas High School students like Sam Acosta-Chavez, Sierra Adie, Elizabeth Gneiting, and others, mentored by teachers Kelley Yost and Zoe Shorten, are showcasing their artwork.
Carson High School’s students, including Victoria Dao, Lila Downs, Maritza Lopez Garcia, and many more, worked with teachers Patricia Ababio, Alisa Kuniya, Karen McCraw, and Matt Theilen to create their pieces. The Initiative will announce a 0 Aim scholarship award at the reception on April 10 for graduating seniors continuing their education in the fall at a college or technical school, thanks to a generous donor.
Sharon Rosse, Executive Director of CCAI, expressed pride in presenting the creative talents of local high school students and emphasized the sophistication and diversity of their achievements showcased in the art exhibition.
The “Spring Forward 2024” show is part of CCAI’s commitment to fostering community engagement in contemporary visual arts through various programs and activities. The Initiative is funded by various organizations and sponsors, including the National Endowment for the Arts, Nevada Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
