Target’s Continued Commitment to Food Security in San Diego: A ,000 Donation to School Pantry Program

In a significant effort to combat food insecurity, Target has announced a ,000 donation to Feeding San Diego, aimed at expanding the nonprofit’s School Pantry Program. This initiative, which operates within local educational institutions, aims to provide access to food for students and their families directly on school campuses. The partnership between Target and Feeding San Diego, which spans an impressive 15 years, underscores the ongoing commitment of both organizations to address hunger in the region.

The announcement is timely, coinciding with Hunger Action Month, a national campaign observed in September to raise awareness about hunger in America and to motivate communities to take meaningful action. In San Diego County alone, over 100,000 children belong to households facing food insecurity, a situation exacerbated by rising financial pressures as students return to school this fall. As these families struggle to make ends meet, the demand for food assistance has seen a significant uptick.

Currently, Feeding San Diego’s School Pantry Program serves 62 schools throughout the county, with an additional 58 schools awaiting the opportunity to participate. The recent contribution from Target will facilitate the establishment of three new school pantries, providing much-needed support for families in need.

In addition to financial contributions, Target’s dedication to Feeding San Diego is reflected in its substantial in-kind donations and volunteer efforts. Since 2010, Target has contributed more than .3 million and provided 17 million pounds of food, equating to over 2.7 million meals distributed within the local community. Moreover, employees from Target’s 28 stores in the San Diego area have volunteered nearly 1,500 hours to assist in Food Bank operations and related activities.

“Target is proud to continue supporting Feeding San Diego’s important work with schools,” remarked Susie Citizen, senior store director for Target San Diego. “We understand the critical role that access to nutritious food plays in children’s health and success. We are committed to helping meet that need in our community.”

The collaborative efforts between Target and Feeding San Diego illustrate the impact that corporate partnerships can have in addressing social issues such as food insecurity. As these initiatives gain momentum, they spotlight the urgent need for continued action and investment in programs that support vulnerable populations across the nation. In the face of rising food insecurity and economic challenges, such partnerships serve as essential lifelines, ensuring that children and families have access to the nourishment they need for a healthier future.
