Medicaid Renewal Process for Children Resumes in Kentucky Following Temporary Extension
Perry County, Kentucky – The temporary Medicaid extension that was implemented for children in Kentucky has officially concluded as of June 30, 2023. As a result, annual Medicaid renewals for Kentucky children will recommence starting July 1. This reinstatement follows a significant hiatus on annual renewals due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected numerous healthcare services across the country.
Officials with Kentucky Voices for Health have launched an initiative aimed at raising awareness about the renewal process, particularly in rural communities. Emily Beauregard, the Executive Director of Kentucky Voices for Health, emphasized the importance of keeping families informed. “In Kentucky, more than 600,000 children are covered by Medicaid and K-CHIP (Kentucky Children’s Health Insurance Program), with approximately 4,800 children in Perry County alone. Our goal is to ensure that parents are aware of the renewal process and understand the necessary steps to maintain their children’s health coverage,” Beauregard stated.
While adult Medicaid renewals resumed earlier this year, Beauregard urged parents not to feel disheartened about their children’s eligibility. It is critical for families to recognize that income thresholds for children are generally higher, which may increase eligibility for Medicaid coverage. “We want to encourage parents to engage with the renewal process and allow the state to determine their children’s eligibility,” Beauregard added.
Kentucky Voices for Health clarified that not all families with children will be required to renew coverage immediately in July. As of the end of June, approximately 8,000 households had received renewal notices that must be completed by the end of July. Other families can expect to receive renewal communications later in the year.
In light of this renewed focus on health coverage, families are encouraged to monitor their mail closely for renewal notices. The timely completion of these documents is essential to ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare services for their children.
