NASA Launches “Message in a Bottle” Campaign to Communicate with Extraterrestrials

In an effort to explore the possibility of life outside of our planet, NASA has initiated a special campaign called “Message in a Bottle” to send a message into space that aims to communicate with extraterrestrials. This ambitious mission is set to be sent to Jupiter’s moon Europa, making it the latest endeavor in a series of similar projects undertaken by NASA.

According to the NASA website, the Europa Clipper spacecraft will carry a special message from Earth, including a plaque inscribed with poetry by U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón, a picture of a bottle floating in the ocean, and a microchip containing the names of 2.6 million individuals submitted by the public. This unique collaboration between art and science brings together NASA, Ada Limón, and the Library of Congress in an effort to connect Earth with Europa through poetic expression.

The plaque also features the Drake equation, formulated by astronomer Frank Drake in 1961 to assess the possibility of advanced civilizations beyond Earth, as well as a tribute to planetary science pioneer Ron Greeley. Sound recordings of the word “water” in 103 languages are encoded into images on the plaque, symbolizing Europa’s potential vast ocean hidden beneath its icy surface.

The Europa Clipper is scheduled to launch from the Kennedy Space Center in October 2024 and reach Jupiter by 2030, conducting 50 flybys around the moon. The mission’s primary goals include determining the moon’s icy shell thickness, studying its composition, and exploring its geology to better understand the potential for life on Europa. Through this innovative campaign, NASA hopes to make meaningful connections with extraterrestrial life forms and expand our understanding of the universe.
