SSE has appointed Finlay McCutcheon as the new Managing Director of SSE Thermal, where he will oversee the company’s flexible power generation and energy storage operations in the UK and Ireland. With a focus on driving the development of low-carbon hydrogen and carbon capture projects, Finlay will begin his new role in May 2024 and join the Group Executive Committee later in the summer, reporting to Chief Commercial Officer Martin Pibworth.
McCutcheon brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having previously served as the Director of Onshore Renewables (Europe) at SSE Renewables and held senior roles within SSE, including Managing Director of Energy Portfolio Management. With a background in Corporate & Commercial law, Finlay joined SSE in 2010 and has since played a key role in the company’s renewable energy projects across Europe.
SSE Thermal has seen strong performance in recent years, supporting electricity systems in the UK and Ireland. The company is actively developing low-carbon growth options, including carbon capture projects, sustainable biofuels, and hydrogen initiatives. Plans have been announced for a new hydrogen-ready power station at Keadby, highlighting SSE Thermal’s commitment to sustainability.
Martin Pibworth, Chief Commercial Officer at SSE, expressed confidence in Finlay’s ability to lead SSE Thermal to the next level, emphasizing the importance of flexible power generation in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
