Performance Evaluation: Ife Ogunjobi at Bristol Jazz Festival

The Bristol Jazz Festival made its debut in the Tobacco Factory with a series of exciting events, showcasing a lineup of talented musicians including Ife Ogunjobi, known for his work with Mercury Prize winning Ezra Collective. Ogunjobi, who recently released his debut solo work, delivered an electrifying performance that had the audience on their feet.

Growing up with the influential Bronswood compilation “We Out Here,” the emergence of musicians like Nubya Garcia and Shabaka Hutchings has brought jazz into the mainstream with vibrant compositions blending Afrobeat and Hip-Hop influences. As a member of Ezra Collective, Ogunjobi has toured internationally and celebrated the band’s Mercury Prize win with a sold-out show at the Royal Albert Hall.

During his set at the festival, Ogunjobi performed tracks from his EP “Stay True,” along with new material and a cover, captivating the audience with his infectious energy. Accompanied by talented musicians Zoe Pascal, Deschanel Gordon, Mutale Chashi, and Moses Olukayode, Ogunjobi’s performance was a mix of improvisation and reworked compositions that kept the crowd engaged and entertained.

The Bristol audience showed their appreciation with thunderous applause, demonstrating their love for live jazz music. The Tobacco Factory provided the perfect setting for the festival, with a lively atmosphere, packed venue, and music spilling out onto the streets.

As the festival wrapped up, it became clear that Ogunjobi’s genuine storytelling through his trumpet playing had resonated with the audience, promising a bright future for the young musician. The success of the event ensures that the Bristol Jazz Festival will be back in 2025, continuing to inspire both veteran musicians and emerging talent.
