Belgian Yummies Ice Cream Sandwiches and Gelato are being recalled due to the presence of undeclared allergens including wheat, soy, egg, coconut, peanuts, and Yellow #5 food dye. These ingredients could pose a serious risk to individuals with allergies or sensitivities to them, as well as those with celiac disease. Although no illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported so far, the recalling firm, Belgian Yummies of Fort Myers, Florida, is taking precautionary measures.
Not all of the recalled products contain all of the allergens. Belgian Yummies Sandwiches in various flavors like Vanilla, Chocolate, Raspberry, Salted Caramel, Key Lime, and Peanut Butter were found to contain undeclared wheat, soy, egg, coconut, and/or peanuts. Similarly, Sofra Sandwiches in Vanilla and Chocolate flavors, and Ria Sandwiches in Vanilla flavor also contained undeclared allergens.
Additionally, Belgian Yummies Gelato in Strawberry flavor contains undeclared FD&C Yellow #5, while Birthday Cake flavor has undeclared wheat and FD&C Yellow #5, and Horchata flavor contains undeclared wheat. These items were distributed in Florida through wholesale orders and were not available for retail sale.
The recall was initiated following an inspection by the Florida Department of Agriculture and the company, which revealed that the products were distributed in packaging that did not disclose the presence of certain allergens. The issue was promptly rectified, but consumers who have purchased these products are advised not to consume them if they are allergic to any of the undeclared allergens. The products can be disposed of in a secure manner or returned for a refund.
The recalled sandwiches are packaged in 4-ounce clear plastic or gold packaging with an expiration date of 08/31/2024, while the gelato comes in containers of various sizes with similar expiration dates. Consumers can refer to the FDA website for images of the product labels and can contact Belgian Yummies for more information regarding the recall process.
