As the back-to-school season approaches, families across the United States are confronting the financial burden associated with preparing their children for the new academic year. According to a recent report from the National Retail Federation (NRF), parents are expected to spend upwards of 0 on clothing, footwear, school supplies, and electronics for their children. This figure highlights the significant financial pressure many families face during this period, particularly as purchasing even the basic items on school supply lists can amount to approximately 0—an expense that is burdensome for numerous households.

The Vilas County Health Department has identified a troubling trend: statistics reveal that one in five children will start the school year without adequate supplies. Caroline Thompson, a Community Health Educator with the health department, underscores the importance of equipping students with the necessary materials. “It’s just important for students to have all the supplies for them to be successful going to school,” said Thompson, emphasizing that access to educational resources is critical for fostering academic success.

In response to this pressing need, the Vilas County Health Department has initiated a back-to-school supply drive aimed at assisting families who may struggle to afford these essential items. The drive, which commenced at the beginning of the month, seeks donations of various school supplies, including backpacks, highlighters, crayons, and hygiene products such as deodorant and feminine hygiene items. A comprehensive list of sought-after items includes:

– Backpacks
– Markers
– Paper
– Crayons
– Tissues
– Pencil cases
– Hand sanitizer
– Glue sticks
– Folders
– Binders
– Notebooks
– Pencils
– Pens
– Personal hygiene products (e.g., toothpaste, shampoo, and conditioner)

This initiative reflects the community’s willingness to support families in need. Thompson expressed gratitude for the volume of donations received thus far, stating, “We didn’t know how well it was going to do, so now, just seeing that there are a bunch of people that want to donate and support their students is really great. It makes us want to do it again next year.”

Donations for the supply drive will be accepted through the end of the month and can be dropped off at either the Vilas County Health Department or the Walter E. Olson Memorial Library during regular operating hours. The collected supplies will be distributed to schools throughout the county, helping ensure that every child has the resources needed to embark on a successful academic year. This initiative not only alleviates some of the financial burdens faced by families but also reinforces the communal spirit of support crucial for educational success.
