Nevada Division of Forestry state nursery is officially open for business as of Thursday, May 9. Back in 1988, when I first purchased my home with its 2.5 acres, the property was lacking in vegetation. However, after discovering the state nursery, I transformed the yard by adding various flowering shrubs and plants like lilacs, sand cherries, and currants, among others.

The state nursery specializes in providing native or adapted plants to help both private landowners and public land management agencies create conservation plantings for various purposes such as windbreaks, erosion control, and wildlife habitat enhancement. It is important to note that plants purchased at the nursery must be used for these specific purposes instead of just landscaping.

If you have a property that requires erosion control or a windbreak, the experts at NDF can assist you in selecting the right plants and provide guidance on planting and maintenance. The Nursery, located at 885 Eastlake Boulevard in east Washoe Valley, will be open from Thursday, May 9 to Saturday, May 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

For those interested in the plant list, they can email washoenursery@forestry.nv.gov. Pricing for larger-sized stock ranges from for a 1-gallon plant to .75 for a 5-gallon plant.

In addition to the state nursery, there is also an annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale on Saturday, May 11 at The Greenhouse Project in Carson City. This event offers a variety of nursery plants suitable for the high desert climate, with proceeds supporting educational initiatives and the production of organic produce for the community.

Overall, the state nursery and the upcoming plant sale provide excellent opportunities to enhance your property with native plants while supporting local educational and community initiatives.
