University of Westminster students recently participated in the Student Climate Action Network Festival (StuCAN) in Wales. The festival, hosted by StuCAN and the Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN), took place at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in Machynlleth, Wales. More than 60 students from various universities across the UK gathered to explore sustainability in the building environment.
The University of Westminster students attended the festival as part of their involvement in the School of Architecture + Cities Climate Action Task Force (ArCCAT). This task force, made up of staff and students from the School of Architecture + Cities, is dedicated to bringing about a cultural shift in education to combat climate change.
Activities at the festival included a sustainable water system tour hike, lectures from students and keynote speakers, as well as collaborative activities and drawing workshops. Students had the opportunity to engage with like-minded individuals and exchange perspectives on pressing issues in architecture and the built environment.
The event directly contributed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Quality Education and Sustainable Cities and Communities. The University of Westminster has been using the SDGs to make strategic decisions since 2019 to promote a more sustainable, equitable, and healthier society.
Overall, the students found the festival to be an inspiring and enriching experience. They emphasized the importance of collective climate action in combating the climate crisis and expressed their commitment to driving impactful transformations in their profession. The festival not only provided valuable insights and knowledge but also fostered a sense of community and collaboration among students passionate about sustainability and climate action.
