Veteran Hong Kong actor Tony Leung has been announced as the president of the international competition at this year’s Tokyo Film Festival. Leung expressed his immense honor at joining the jury team at TIFF this year, stating that Japan holds a special place in his heart.
Having grown up watching classic Japanese movies from a young age, Leung’s love for Japanese film, culture, and people has only grown over the years. He is looking forward to the festival full of surprises and fun and hopes for an audacious lineup of quality films. Leung emphasized the importance of trusting fellow jurors’ feelings in the selection process.
Leung has a long history with the Tokyo Film Festival, having first participated in the 13th edition in 2000. His extensive filmography includes acclaimed works such as “A City of Sadness,” “Cyclo,” “Lust, Caution,” “Hero,” “Infernal Affairs,” and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” In 2023, he was honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 80th Venice Film Festival.
