In 2008, Meals on Wheels volunteer Karen Moore delivered food to a family residing in one of Nashville’s high-risk neighborhoods. Upon entering the home, she was struck by the stark reality of their living conditions. The apartment was void of furniture, and when Karen inquired about the sleeping arrangements, the mother pointed to a pile of clothes on the floor, responding, “Honey, I don’t have any furniture. That’s where we sleep.”
This encounter left a profound impact on Moore, shaking her to her core. Her father had instilled in her a deep sense of the importance of giving back, and she felt compelled to take action. “This isn’t happening on my watch,” she declared to her husband, articulating a newfound determination to make a difference. “Everyone deserves a house that feels like a home!”
What began as a simple meal delivery evolved into a community-driven initiative. Karen organized a group of four friends to gather furniture donations, and together they transformed the family’s apartment by installing two sets of bunk beds for the children.
