Erin Bila Takes the Helm at California Tortilla, Columbia Location
COLUMBIA, MD — Erin Bila has transitioned from a cashier at California Tortilla to the co-owner of the franchise’s Columbia branch, marking a significant milestone in her professional journey. This change not only represents a personal achievement for Bila, but also underscores the evolving landscape of local franchise ownership in Howard County.
The transition occurred at the beginning of the month when Bila, along with her husband, Rogerio, and business partner, Dilshad Awan, took over the operation from the previous owner, who lacked the passion for the brand that the new owners possess. “The former owner wanted to get out; he wasn’t passionate about the brand as we were,” Bila explained. “It was just meant to be, I guess.”
With several years of managerial experience across various franchise locations behind them, the new owners were eager to embark on their first venture as franchisees. Initially searching for a suitable location in Montgomery County, the team found their opportunity in the Columbia Crossing shopping center, which currently holds promise as a bustling hub for local dining.
“Now that we’re here, we’re actually looking to expand in the Howard County area and the Columbia area. So, I don’t know, maybe Montgomery County might have lost us,” Bila stated, hinting at future growth plans. They are committed to making the restaurant a welcoming and enjoyable place for both employees and customers. An avocado keychain, representing the signature icon of California Tortilla, was one of Bila’s first purchases after officially becoming franchise owners.
Bila reminisces fondly about her early days at California Tortilla, recalling a vibrant workplace where both employees and patrons experienced joy. “We loved the culture. It was a happy place to work at,” she remarked. “I was happy working there. The employees were happy, the customers were happy.”
In keeping with their community-centric philosophy, Bila and her team aim to maintain high standards for food quality and ingredient selection. Regular customers, such as Priya Davis, emphasize the importance of fresh options and the ability for children to customize their meals. “I think I just like that it’s fresh; it just tastes good,” said Davis, echoing the sentiments of many loyal patrons.
To further enhance their connection with the community, the Columbia location is introducing a family-oriented promotion set to start this Sunday, offering a free kids meal with the purchase of every adult meal. “We love families; we have families ourselves, so obviously families are welcome and everyone’s welcome here,” Bila noted. “But on Sundays, kids get special treatment.”
As Erin Bila and her partners embark on this new chapter, their commitment to fostering a positive atmosphere and contributing to the local community is evident. The Columbia location of California Tortilla is poised for growth, as it continues to be a go-to destination for fresh, customizable dining options in Howard County.
