Louisville Free Public Library and Fund for the Arts Kick Off Summer Reading and Cultural Pass Programs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In an effort to enrich the cultural and educational experiences of local families, the Louisville Free Public Library (LFPL) has joined forces once again with the Fund for the Arts to launch the 12th annual Summer Reading and Cultural Pass initiative. The kickoff celebration, held on Saturday morning, drew hundreds of families eager to engage with the diverse offerings available through this collaborative program.

The Summer Reading and Cultural Pass initiative is designed to combat summer learning loss by providing Louisville residents aged 21 and younger, along with their families, complimentary access to various arts and cultural activities at more than 50 participating venues. This initiative not only promotes literacy but also encourages children to explore their community through interactive cultural experiences, including art, music, nature, and more.

Andre Guess, CEO of Fund for the Arts, articulated the program’s dual objectives. “This initiative offers an opportunity for children to sign up for summer reading. They can read numerous books, earn rewards, and simultaneously engage with local arts and cultural institutions, which helps enhance their learning during the summer months,” he explained.

Since its inception in 2014, the program has made a significant impact, with nearly 240,000 passes issued to date, reflecting a growing interest in cultural engagement among the city’s youth. Guess noted that last year marked a transition to a digital format, which he anticipates will further increase participation. “Last year, we provided 36,000 paper passes, but with the new digital app, users can access the program easily through the Apple Store or Google Play Store,” he said. This shift aims to streamline the process of discovering and participating in cultural activities, thereby broadening access.

The Cultural Pass app serves as a valuable tool for families, allowing them to track their cultural endeavors and learn about upcoming events in the greater Louisville area. Kate Schiavi, youth services manager at LFPL, emphasized the literacy components intertwined with the program, stating, “Our initiative is literacy-based, encouraging children to remain active in their reading.” This focus ensures that children return to school well-prepared, having engaged with materials that enhance their learning.

Incorporating the diverse cultural fabric of Louisville is also a cornerstone of this program. With residents representing over 100 nations and speaking more than 150 languages, the event promotes inclusion and celebrates the community’s multicultural identity. Monica Lakhwani and Vivian Marin from the Office of Immigrant Affairs highlighted the significance of this initiative to the city’s diverse population. “It’s vital for children to see themselves represented and for others to learn about different cultures,” Lakhwani remarked.

With the Cultural Pass running until August 10, 2025, local families are encouraged to visit the LFPL, access its website, or download the Cultural Pass app to participate in this enriching experience. By actively engaging with Louisville’s cultural landscape, families can create lasting memories while supporting their children’s educational growth.
