The annual Elgar Festival in Worcester, celebrating the life and music of Worcestershire’s renowned composer, Sir Edward Elgar, is set to return this week. Established in 2018 by decree of Worcester City Council, the festival occurs each year on the weekend closest to Elgar’s birthday, 2 June 1857.
This year’s festival will feature a diverse program including orchestral, chamber, vocal, and choral concerts, as well as exhibits and lectures across various venues in Worcestershire. Artistic Director Kenneth Woods emphasizes the importance of honoring Elgar’s legacy and highlighting the city’s rich heritage.
Edward Elgar is recognized as one of Britain’s most significant creative figures, with his music resonating globally. Woods underscores the impact Elgar had on Worcestershire’s vibrant music culture, comparing his influence to that of Shakespeare in literature.
The upcoming 2024 Elgar Festival will take place from Monday, 27 May to Sunday, 2 June. Attendees can expect a week filled with performances and activities celebrating the enduring legacy of Sir Edward Elgar in his beloved hometown.
