Youngstown Community School Students Benefit from Generous Winter Coat Donation

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – In a heartwarming community initiative, over 300 students from the Youngstown Community School received much-needed winter coats on Thursday, thanks to a collaboration between Boardman Subaru and the nonprofit organization, Operation Warm. The initiative was further supported by the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, showcasing how local businesses and organizations come together to address the needs of their community.

Fifth grader Ernel Crump was among those thrilled to receive a new blue coat, remarking on its “cool” appearance as he joined his classmates in the school cafeteria. The coat distribution allowed students to choose their preferred coat color, followed by staff assistance from Boardman Subaru to ensure a proper fit.

This marks the second consecutive year that Boardman Subaru has participated in this initiative. According to John Stanko, Vice President of Boardman Subaru, the coat giveaway is part of the broader Subaru Love Promise. “This is our initiative called Subaru Loves to Help,” Stanko explained. “Together with Operation Warm and United Way, we aim to donate coats to children in need, reinforcing our commitment to being more than just a car dealership.”

The coats were ordered directly from Operation Warm, aligning with Subaru’s mission of community involvement. Stanko emphasized the dealership’s dedication to social responsibility, noting that they engage in community support initiatives at least four times a year, targeting various causes such as health, economic struggles, and environmental awareness.

“The company prioritizes community engagement,” said Robbie Fellman, Fixed Operations Director at Boardman Subaru. “We’re fortunate to work for a company that encourages us to contribute positively to the community. This is an extraordinary opportunity to make a meaningful difference.”

Michelle Payich, Superintendent of the Youngstown Community School, highlighted the significance of such community partnerships. “These collaborations help eliminate barriers to learning,” she stated. In the context of current economic challenges, such as inflation, these efforts provide vital support to families in need. “With so many families struggling right now, any assistance we can provide is invaluable,” she added.

Students like Cameron Campbell, Raymon Monknox, and Savayah Saunders expressed joy over their new coats, with each selecting styles that reflect their personal tastes. Cameron, who chose a black and blue coat, shared his excitement about receiving a coat that aligns with his favorite colors.

The generosity demonstrated through this coat giveaway underscores the importance of community involvement and support for local youth. Kielly Rapp, the Community Impact Director of United Way, highlighted ongoing initiatives, including Care Closets at local schools, aimed at ensuring access to basic needs for children in the community. “Our goal is to understand and address the fundamental needs of our children, dismantling barriers to their success,” she stated.

In summary, events like the winter coat giveaway not only provide immediate relief for local families but also foster a strong sense of community, demonstrating that collective efforts can have a profound impact on the well-being of students and their families in Youngstown.
