Access to Digital Literature Expands in St. Louis Through ePop Up Library Initiative
ST. LOUIS — A newly implemented initiative by the St. Louis County Library is providing children and their families with access to a vast collection of digital and audiobooks through its ePop Up Library program. Utilizing a simple QR code, this service aims to enrich the literary experience for those in waiting scenarios, particularly in healthcare facilities and public venues.
The ePop Up Library program, which has already made its mark at various locations including Lambert Airport, Metrolink stations, St. Louis County government buildings, and Schnucks grocery stores, has been extended to five pediatric healthcare establishments: Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Shriners Children’s St. Louis, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. This strategic expansion underscores a commitment to providing educational and entertaining resources to children undergoing medical treatments or extended stays away from home.
“By partnering with local healthcare facilities, we are opening a literary world for our patients and families that will leave a lifelong impact,” remarked Laura Teague, senior recreational therapist at Shriners Children’s St. Louis. This sentiment reflects a broader understanding of the crucial role that literature plays in supporting emotional well-being and cognitive engagement, especially in challenging environments.
The program was conceived a year ago by Kristen Sorth, the director and CEO of the St. Louis County Library, who sought to enhance accessibility to literature for individuals in situations where they may be waiting for prolonged periods. By scanning the QR code — available on promotional posters and bookmarks — users can access hundreds of various titles categorized for children, teens, and adults. Notably, this service requires no library card, making it accessible to a broader audience.
A further testament to the program’s potential benefits is echoed by Julie Schwarz, child life manager at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. She stated, “This program will give our patients and families access to hundreds of books that can help them manage their stress and brighten their hospital stay.” Additionally, teachers working with hospitalized youth will find this resource invaluable for helping students keep pace with their academic responsibilities.
The QR codes are prominently displayed above water fountains in both airport and Schnucks locations, ensuring that patrons and families are aware of this innovative resource. As the ePop Up Library program progresses, its impact on accessibility to literature and the enrichment of patients’ experiences continues to be a pronounced focal point for the St. Louis community.
The generosity of the St. Louis County Library, coupled with the cooperative efforts of healthcare organizations, demonstrates a united approach towards fostering a culture of literacy and learning among children across the region. By providing access to a wealth of literary material, this initiative seeks to inspire a love for reading and promote the emotional resilience of young patients and their families.
