Franklin & Marshall College Launches “Commonwealth Commitment” Initiative to Enhance Access to Private Education

LANCASTER, Pa. — In a significant step towards improving access to higher education, Franklin & Marshall College (F&M) has announced the launch of its “Commonwealth Commitment,” a groundbreaking initiative designed to provide tuition-free education for families across Pennsylvania. This innovative program is poised to alleviate the financial burden often associated with private higher education, making F&M an attractive option for in-state students.

The “Commonwealth Commitment” program, effective immediately for Pennsylvania residents applying as first-year students, offers a remarkable opportunity for families earning ,000 or less annually to attend F&M without the cost of tuition. For households with incomes ranging between ,000 and 0,000, tuition is capped at a rate equivalent to that of Pennsylvania State University’s in-state tuition, ensuring that a top-tier education remains within reach for a larger segment of the population.

Andrew Rich, president of Franklin & Marshall College, emphasized the institution’s commitment to accessibility. “Franklin & Marshall College is, proudly, a Pennsylvania institution,” he declared. “We’ve always wanted to be known as open and available to all Pennsylvanians — and we wanted to signal what that meant.” The program aims to transform the perception of private education in the state, encouraging more families to consider options they might have previously deemed unattainable.

According to F&M’s statistics, an impressive 92% of its graduates secure employment, internships, or continue their education within a year of graduation. Moreover, their early-career earnings surpass the state average for four-year colleges, underscoring the institution’s strong return on investment. Rich noted, “If you go to F&M, your earnings five and ten years out are substantially higher than graduates of Penn State, Pitt, or Temple. The return on investment really speaks to what students are looking for.”

The unveiling of this initiative coincides with ongoing challenges surrounding the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which has resulted in processing delays and uncertainty regarding federal student financial aid. However, Rich reassured potential applicants that F&M is prepared to effectively support those interested in the program. “We’re good on our end. This program is up and running, and we will absolutely move forward with it,” he stated.

Ultimately, F&M’s administration hopes that the Commonwealth Commitment will not only increase enrollment figures but also reshape perceptions regarding private education in Pennsylvania. “It’s not out of reach,” Rich said, urging families to consider F&M as a viable and affordable option. Further details on eligibility and financial aid information can be found on F&M’s official website, where prospective students can learn more about this transformative opportunity.

With the Commonwealth Commitment, Franklin & Marshall College reaffirms its pledge to be a leader in educational accessibility and equity, setting a precedent for other institutions nationwide.
