Library Innovations Support Parents in Maryland with Workstations for Children

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — In an effort to support working parents and caregivers who might struggle to balance childcare with essential tasks, the Baltimore County Public Library has introduced innovative workstations at several of its branches. This initiative aims to provide a practical solution for those seeking an environment conducive to both productivity and child engagement.

These specialized workstations feature a desk equipped with a computer and internet access, enclosed in a safe play area designed for one to two children. For parents like Kate Sigler, using this facility is a revelation. “Just knowing that there’s a secure space where my daughter can play instead of running through the library is a tremendous relief,” she explained. For many libraries, the challenge has often been the separation of adult workspaces from children’s play areas, rendering it difficult for parents to focus while ensuring their children are safe.

The introduction of these workstations addresses a long-standing need within the community, as highlighted by Conni Strittmatter, the youth and family engagement manager for the library system. “We welcome many different patrons who can benefit from a combined space that fosters both learning and child engagement,” Strittmatter stated. The workstations are currently available on a first-come, first-served basis and have rapidly gained popularity among library visitors.

This model represents a significant evolution in how public libraries cater to their communities. “We have recognized the need for diverse spaces that can accommodate both quiet study and interactive play, creating more engaging environments for all visitors,” noted Strittmatter.

Feedback from parents has been overwhelmingly positive. For Kate and Alice, the experience was more than just functional; it also allowed for quality bonding time. With a selection of books and toys included in the play area, Alice happily occupied herself, allowing her mother a brief respite to tackle her tasks. “She loved playing with the little dogs I brought along, which kept her entertained just long enough for me to get some work done,” Kate added.

Importantly, these workstations have been established with safety in mind. All equipment is securely attached to the workstations to eliminate any concerns regarding unauthorized access. Funding for this initiative comes from a dedicated grant, and the library is actively pursuing additional financial support to extend this service to more branches across Baltimore County. Initiatives like these not only enhance community resources but also underscore the evolving role of public libraries in fostering family-oriented environments that promote both learning and security in public spaces.
