Explore Urban Biodiversity at Green-Wood Cemetery’s ‘Green Adventure for Families’ Event
As Earth Month approaches, families in Brooklyn have a unique opportunity to engage with nature and learn about biodiversity at the “Green Adventure for Families” event hosted by Green-Wood Cemetery. Scheduled for Sunday, April 27, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, this hands-on educational experience invites participants of all ages to explore the unexpected natural richness within New York City’s urban landscape.
Jointly organized by Green-Wood and the community bio lab Genspace, the event aims to bridge the gap between urban living and the natural world. It features guided nature walks, interactive science sessions, and art activities, providing an immersive experience that fosters environmental awareness. According to Rachel Walman, Director of Education at Green-Wood, the initiative is designed to nurture future generations of environmentalists by highlighting the significance of biodiversity and conservation efforts within the heart of Brooklyn.
“Green-Wood’s landscape serves as the ideal setting for families to experience nature up close in an urban environment,” Walman stated. This approach underscores the dual role of Green-Wood Cemetery, which is not only a historically rich site but also a vibrant sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna. Families attending the event will take part in engaging activities, including guided walks that focus on observing various species of birds, insects, fungi, and plants, aligning seamlessly with the global City Nature Challenge initiative, which encourages urban wildlife observation.
Participants will also have the opportunity to partake in scavenger hunts, hands-on nature-themed crafts, and live demonstrations. Activities such as leaf paper-making and exploring microscopic organisms offer children a tangible connection to the natural world. A highlight of the event is a bee hunt conducted by a scientist from the Museum of Natural History, illustrating the critical role of pollinators in urban ecosystems.
Derya Mergin, Senior Manager of Public Programs at Green-Wood, noted the transformative potential of viewing spaces often seen as somber as vibrant educational venues. “As a nationally accredited arboretum, our grounds are home to thousands of trees and diverse wildlife, offering families a unique opportunity to connect with nature and history, while fostering a sense of wonder and stewardship for our environment,” Mergin remarked.
The “Green Adventure for Families” event serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity present even in urban settings and encourages families to appreciate and protect their local environment, making it an essential experience for environmentally conscious families throughout the city.
