Hobart Fire Department Welcomes Two New Firefighter/EMTs in Swearing-In Ceremony
In a significant event for the Hobart community, the Hobart Fire Department held a formal swearing-in ceremony at its headquarters this morning, where Firefighter/EMTs Samuel Stevens and Benjamin Casillas were officially welcomed into service. This occasion marks a noteworthy addition to the department, which is now fully staffed for the first time in recent memory.
Both Stevens and Casillas arrive with valuable experience from their previous roles in the fire service, ready to contribute to the department’s mission of safeguarding lives and property. The swearing-in ceremony serves as a rite of passage, symbolizing the transition from training to active duty in a profession that demands courage, commitment, and a deep sense of responsibility.
Hobart Fire Chief Enrique Lopez addressed the attendees, emphasizing the significance of the ceremony beyond the individuals’ past experiences. “This moment is not just a reflection of what you have done but symbolizes the commitment you are making moving forward,” he stated. “The badge you earn today represents the trust bestowed upon you by the citizens of Hobart, your fellow firefighters, and the families who stand behind you.”
Highlighting the essential support of families, Chief Lopez spoke candidly about the sacrifices that come with a career in firefighting, which often involves extended hours, missed holidays, and unpredictable challenges. He expressed gratitude for the family members present, acknowledging that their support is crucial in making this demanding profession sustainable.
Mayor Josh Huddlestun, who administered the oath of office to the new firefighters, expressed his pride in their decision to serve the City of Hobart. He extended a warm welcome to Stevens and Casillas, acknowledging the dedication and bravery inherent in their new roles.
The ceremony also shed light on the commendable staffing levels of the Hobart Fire Department. Administrative Assistant Terry Newman, who has been with the department for over 44 years, shared that the current workforce is among the largest in the organization’s history, with 63 personnel including firefighters, leadership, and support staff. “This level of staffing not only enhances our response capabilities but demonstrates the community’s commitment to supporting an effective fire service,” Newman noted.
The Hobart Fire Department plays a crucial role in the community by providing fire suppression, emergency medical services (EMS), rescue operations, and community risk reduction initiatives. As Stevens and Casillas embark on their careers, they join a proud legacy of service that prioritizes the safety and well-being of residents and businesses across Hobart, Indiana.
