Polestar 3, the first electric SUV from Polestar, has officially begun production in Chengdu, China, ahead of its initial deliveries. This new model, announced in October 2022, is a crucial addition to Polestar’s lineup and will also be manufactured in the United States, specifically in South Carolina.
While the Polestar 3’s production will start in China, where its sibling models are currently made, the SUV’s launch was delayed to Q1 2024 to allow for software development shared with Volvo Cars. Volvo recently announced plans to sell a majority of its stake in Polestar, but the EV automaker will continue its partnership with China’s Geely.
Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, announced that production of the Polestar 3 SUV has commenced in Chengdu, with plans to expand production to the US by mid-2024. Initial tests at the South Carolina plant have been successful, signaling progress towards manufacturing the Polestar 3 in the USA.
The Polestar 3, priced starting at around ,000, will be available in markets across Asia, Europe, and the US. Following the Polestar 3, the company plans to introduce a compact SUV, the Polestar 4, a sports sedan, the Polestar 5, and the Polestar 6 based on the Roadster Concept. With production now in full swing, Polestar is gearing up to expand its electric vehicle lineup and make a mark in the global EV market.
