Quincy Initiates Philanthropy Program for High School Students
QUINCY, IL – In an effort to cultivate a culture of giving and civic engagement among young people, the Community Foundation and the Tracy Family Foundation have launched a new program aimed at high school students in Quincy. This initiative is designed to educate students about philanthropy, grantmaking, and the vital role that non-profit organizations play in the community.
Catherine Meckes, the CEO of the Community Foundation, emphasized that the program is free and accessible to students from Quincy High School, Quincy Notre Dame, as well as homeschoolers within the city. “The program will provide a comprehensive understanding of non-profits and the ethos of philanthropy,” Meckes explained. “We will meet once a month for an hour, starting with foundational concepts such as the definitions of non-profits and philanthropy. As the program progresses, students will learn values-driven decision-making for charitable contributions.”
One of the most significant features of this program is its hands-on approach. By spring, participating students will have a combined budget of ,000 to allocate to various local non-profits. This component not only teaches students about the evaluation process in philanthropy but also empowers them to make impactful decisions that can benefit their community. “By the end of the program, students will not only have theoretical knowledge but also practical experience in grantmaking and community support,” Meckes added.
Megan Costigan, the Program Manager at the Tracy Family Foundation, expressed aspirations for broader learning outcomes from the initiative. “We hope the students learn about philanthropy, develop soft skills throughout the process, and enhance their ability to collaborate in board meetings,” Costigan said. “Communication skills are essential, and through this program, we aim to prepare them for future leadership roles.”
While this program is newly established, both Meckes and Costigan are optimistic about its longevity and impact. They see it as a foundational step towards fostering a new generation of engaged citizens who recognize the importance of philanthropy in societal development.
Students interested in participating in the program must submit their applications by September 1. The application link can be found on the Community Foundation’s website at www.mycommunityfoundation.org/tag.
This initiative represents a vital investment in the future of Quincy’s youth, equipping them with essential knowledge and skills that extend beyond the classroom, reinforcing the community’s social fabric.
