‘Barry Island Welcomes Back Gŵyl Fach y Fro: A Festivity of Welsh Arts and Culture’

Barry Island is gearing up for the highly anticipated return of Gŵyl Fach y Fro, the popular Welsh arts and culture festival, set to take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024. Organized by Menter Iaith Bro Morgannwg, this lively event promises a day filled with music, creativity, and community spirit, all delivered in the beautiful Welsh language.

Live performances at the festival will range from a stage featuring primary school choirs to well-known bands like Fleur De Lys, Lowri Evans, Sage Todz & Parisa Fouladi, Wigwam, and Gwcci. In addition, a new stage will showcase folk artists including Bethan Nia, Brigyn, and Lo-Fi Jones, highlighting the diverse talent within the Welsh music scene.

The cultural immersion at Gŵyl Fach y Fro allows attendees to fully embrace the Welsh language, with entertainment presented exclusively in Cymraeg. Whether you are a fluent speaker or simply curious, the festival offers a chance to celebrate Wales’ linguistic heritage through activities like hula-hoop workshops with The Sparklettes and contemporary dance performances, such as the new show Mari Ha! by dancer/choreographer Osian Meilir. The event will also feature a specially commissioned anthem honoring the best of the Vale of Glamorgan, performed by a massed choir and dance group.

Beyond the performances, festival-goers can enjoy exploring craft stalls, sampling delicious food, and participating in family-friendly activities. Gŵyl Fach y Fro is not just a music festival but a comprehensive celebration of Welsh culture in all its forms.
